Chinese medicine is one of the most ancient form of health care in existence. Although not widely known, it is an adaptation of Ayurvedic medicine. The Chinese adopted the principles they had learned from Ayurvedic medicine and adapted its alchemical understanding of life, health, and disease to Chinese culture. So, although Chinese medicine is often touted to be 3,000 to 6,000 years old, its fundamental principles go further back into Ayurvedic medicine which is widely accepted as being more than 5,000 years old.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is actually a new terminology that emerged under Mao Tse Tung's repressive regime, possibly the only positive legacy of his otherwise brutal years of ruling. (A recent feature on CBC radio reported that more than 70 million people were killed for various reasons during his years in power).
TCM is what happened to Chinese medicine when knowledge from masters around the country was transferred through books and organized classes as opposed to being handed down to his apprentices. Under the current system, TCM is comprised of various disciplines including acupuncture, herbal medicine, Feng Shui, Tai Qi, nutrition, and more. Qi Gong is closely related to TCM but is taught as a separate discipline.
